The Proposal (2009)

The Proposal is not the worst romantic comedy I’ve seen but it’s a good demonstration of why I fundamentally have issues with the genre. Some of my favorite movies are romances, some of my favorite movies are comedies but when you mix the two it’s usually to disastrous results. There’s a lack of balance between the two. Either the involving romance is broken up by antidotal scenes to lighten up a well-established mood or the comedic gags are bridges by these romantic moments that the film doesn’t earn. The Lake House (2006)

Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock were cute together in Speed. Sure, it was all about the action and they bonded more over the stress of the situation more than anything else. But what if we made a whole movie about just the two of them? 12 years later we get just that. But with over a decade since the two have worked together do they still have that chemistry? 500 Days of Summer (2009)


If you really must fit 500 Days of Summer into a genre the most logical label is the Romantic Comedy. The film centers around a romance and a lot of the film is played for comedic effect. Yet calling a film of a romantic comedy presupposes that the lead couple, while initially hating each other, will get together in the end. 500 Days of Summer is not about the getting together bit, but the messy breaking up that happens afterwards.
