Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team

Gundam is one of the pillars of anime, an entire franchise birthed in the medium that branched off into other mediums and the most lucrative intellectual properties in the world to have its origins in anime. And it makes sense given how the spectacle of giant mecs fighting an interplanetary war is the perfect world for the animation medium where production costs won’t run as high as live-action TV and film. Moana (2016)

The best Disney film this side of Tangled. Moana is a delightful mix of different music, solid storytelling, and a mentally challenged chicken. From the Polynesian setting to the the lack of romantic subplot, Disney makes something fresh while also being familiar. It’s the same princess story we’d expect, but with a lot of interesting twists and turns along the way. Continue reading Moana (2016)

Tokyo Godfathers (2003)

Tokyo Godfathers opens with Christmas mass. The Tokyo congregation is not made up of finely dressed churchgoers, but a ragged group of homeless people. Amidst the throng of people are Hana (Yoshiaki Umegaki) and Gin (Toru Emori). As the two wait in line, Hana bemoans that he’s a woman trapped in a male body and wonders if he might become the virgin Marry and conceive without sex. When he tells the server he’s eating for two, the shock is palpable. The duo returns to Miyuki (Aya Okamoto), a spunky teen with a chip on her shoulder. Continue reading Tokyo Godfathers (2003)
