Lymelife (2009)

“The American Dream Sucks” according to the tagline of this movie and in order to make a dream that perfectly encapsulates just how much that dream sucks we are going to do our best to make something that sucks just as much as that dream. But whose dream is this? Who wants to life like these people? Are there people out there who want to live in suburbs with gossipy neighbors and creepy under-aged sluts? Is the American dream picket fences and modern housing? Do the rich even have dreams or know anything about being American? But I digress. I’m not here to argue about what the American dream. Rian Johnson proved with his directorial debut, Brick, that he can take a classical Hollywood era genre and create something, fresh and exciting while still maintaining what makes the genre great. And with The Brothers Bloom he’s done just that to the heist genre. It a summer littered with stale films Johnson has crafted one of the most creative and fun films of the decade. So you’re going to make a movie about a young girl discovering her identity through obscure, violent sporting events? I’m there. For those of you who have not experienced the crazier side of American sports there’s a great little sport called roller derby. It’s like roller skating but with violence, because all good American sports need violence. Add in chicks with tight tank tops and tough attitude and you’ve got yourself a marketable film. Inglourious Basterds (2009)

Plotting in love

Well, he got part of it right. If there’s one thing this film is, it’s inglorious. And come to think of it everyone is a bastard so he got it all right. While the film has its moments it’s caught in its own little film universe, unable to see its faults from within. Quentin Tarantino’s part spaghetti Western part war exploitation film suffers from excessive dialogue, poorly executed violence and ripping off films in general.
