Hellboy goes down south. He meets a good old country boy named Tom. Tom reckons that Hellboy can’t be the devil if he can entered a church. Besides, Tom’s seen the devil before, a lanky man with a creepy smile known as The Crooked Man. A local witch takes an shine to Tom and turns his father into a horse. When the horse is killed, it reverts back to the body of his father,.Tom takes it upon himself to carry his dead father to the church, saying it’s penance for his sins. The Third Wish

At the end of Conqueror Worm, Hellboy mentioned he might go to Africa. Here he meets an old shaman who tells him the stories whispered in his ear by a spider. He speaks of a monster in the scene known as Bog Roosh, a humanesque fish creature. Hellboy ends up on the wrong side of a wave and finds himself washed into the ocean. He ends up entangled with three mermaids who turn him over to the Bog Roosh. As a reward, she grants each mermaid a wish. Of course, the wishes backfire. Continue reading Hellboy: Strange Places

Along the way, he revisits a lot of influences and ideas that haven’t been seen since Wake the Devil. This means pulp influences, Nazis and more. This might be my two favorite pages of Hellboy. Hell, this might be my two favorite pages of comics. It’s a short, elegant story executed to perfection. A general forces a young Hellboy to eat pancakes. While Hellboy enjoys this delightful breakfast food, the demons of hell wail and moan, for surely the child is lost if he can enjoy pancakes. Hellboy: The Chained Coffin and Others

The Corpse

It begins with iron and flame. In the rolling hills of Ireland, Hellboy is solicited by a family to find out what is wrong with their child. Turns out their child is actually a goblin, which Hellboy finds out by pinching it with a fire iron. To regain the child, Hellboy takes on a quest to bury a corpse. A giant boar monster shows up at the burial ground. Hellboy beats the boar, buries the corpse and returns the child all before sunrise. Not a bad night.
