The Patternist Series

Octavia Butler is notable for being a Black female author in a genre where the most celebrated figures tend to be white males. In the early years of science fiction the uncredited publishing of stories in pulp magazines means it is hard to know how many Black or female science fiction authors might have impacted the genre. From what we do know, Butler is the most influential Black female and science fiction, winning Hugo and Nebula awards for her work.

A Canticle for Leibowitz (1959)

I know what you’re thinking right now: “What’s a canticle and why is there one for Leibowitz?” A canticle is just a fancy word for a Christian song taken from biblical texts that are not found in the Psalms (which is one of the books of the Bible that is entirely comprised of songs). Canticles are popular in many Christian traditions, especially the Catholic Church.
