Revisiting Fez

When Fez released on PC in May of 2013 I adored it. I was fresh out of grad school, looking for a job, and had time on my hands. I quickly played through the game and loved it so much that I completed every optional puzzle, finding every collectible, unlocking every secret until I had every achievement, and saw every room.

Video games have a tendency to want to replicate our world too much. With the potential for anything you could imagine, why not dream of something strange and bizarre? Morrowind does just this, presenting one of the most distinct and rich game worlds seeping with its own mythologies, ideologies, and politics that keep the main quest fascinating all the way up to the end.

The Witness

I want to love this game. It sounds like a dream to me. Jonathan Blow crafts a puzzle game inspired by Myst. But, in practice, this game doesn’t work. It’s well-crafted, smartly made, and gorgeous looking, but the moment you get stuck on a puzzle, the whole thing falls apart.
